Academic English Courses and Learning Outcomes

ENG101-İletişim Becerileri ve Akademik Rapor Yazma I

This course is a Fall term course designed for freshmen who have successfully completed their Preparatory Program and/or passed the English Proficiency Exam. The primary aim of the course is to develop the students’ reading, writing, speaking and thinking skills in an academic context and to assist them in applying the skills they learned in their departmental studies. In this course, students will work on reading and analyzing academic texts, developing a focused summary paragraph and giving presentations on different topics.

 

 

ENG102-İletişim Becerileri ve Akademik Rapor Yazma II

This course is designed for freshmen as a Spring Term course. The primary aim of the course is to develop the students’ reading, writing, speaking and thinking skills in an academic context and to assist them in applying the skills they learned in their departmental studies. In this course, students will work on reading and analyzing academic texts, developing a focused reaction essay by using the techniques learnt effectively and giving presentations on different topics.

 

 

ENG201-İletişim Becerileri ve Akademik Rapor Yazma III

This course is designed for sophomore students for the purpose of developing students’ reading, writing, and speaking skills.  Thus, an integrated skills approach is employed to create opportunities for students to practice and improve their language and critical thinking skills. In this course students are introduced to different types of articles and expected to analyze these article critically, and use these sources to support and develop an argument in written and spoken work.

 

 

ENG202-İletişim Becerileri ve Akademik Rapor Yazma IV

This course is designed for sophomore students for the purpose of developing students’ academic presentation skills. Thus, students will be provided with both the information to develop their academic presentation skills and opportunities to practice these skills.

 

 

ENG301-Yazılı İletişim

This course is designed for students who are nearing their graduation. The course aims to equip students with business writing skills required for professional life and also help them discover their own personalities, abilities, interests and future expectations through business related topics. During the course, students practice writing Inquiry E-mails, CV, Cover Letter, Statement of Purpose along with a self-reflective paragraph to be used for their future applications and work life. Students also familiarize themselves with work place concepts as they practice formal language register and business-related vocabulary in their written work. While the primary focus is on written communication skills in work life, all four skills are practiced throughout the course.

 

 

ENG302-Sözlü İletişim

This course is designed for students who are nearing their graduation. The primary aim of the course is to equip the students with the skills required for professional life. During the course, students practice job interviewing, telephoning, holding business meetings, writing follow-up emails and presenting information by using a standard framework and formal register. They also familiarize themselves with business-related vocabulary and work place concepts. While the primary focus is on oral communication skills in business contexts, all four skills are practiced throughout the course where cultural and ethical issues are also explored.

 

 

EEP201-Mühendislik İngilizcesi I

This course is designed for sophomore students for the purpose of developing students’ reading, writing, and communication skills considering their technical knowledge related to engineering and architecture fields.  Thus, an integrated skills approach is employed to create opportunities for students to practice and improve their language and critical thinking skills. In this course students are introduced to different types of articles and technical reports and expected to analyze these articles and technical reports critically. Students are also expected put their knowledge and thoughts in written and spoken work.

 

 

EEP202-Mühendislik İngilizcesi II

This course is designed for sophomore students for the purpose of developing students’ academic presentation skills. Thus, students will be provided with both the information to develop their academic presentation skills and opportunities to practice these skills.

 

EMP101-Tıp İngilizcesi I

This course is designed for freshman and it aims to equip students with business writing skills required for professional life and also help them discover their own personalities, abilities, interests and future expectations mainly through business topics. Various subjects chosen from health sciences (particularly from the Medicine) are also studied and discussed via numerous articles, talks and videos. During the course, students practice writing Inquiry E-mails, CV, Cover Letter, Statement of Purpose along with a self-reflective paragraph to be used for their future applications and work life. Students also familiarize themselves with work place concepts as they practice formal language register and vocabulary commonly used in health sciences and business environment. While the primary focus is on written communication skills in work life, all four skills are practiced throughout the course.

 

 

EMP102-Tıp İngilizcesi II

This course is designed for freshman studying in the faculty of Medicine. The primary aim of the course is to equip the students with the skills required for professional life as healthcare providers. During the course, students practice job interviewing, telephoning, holding business meetings, writing follow-up emails and presenting information by using a standard framework and formal register. They also familiarize themselves with business discourse and business related vocabulary along with work place concepts. While the primary focus is on oral communication skills in business contexts, all four skills are practiced throughout the course where cultural and ethical issues are also explored.

 

 

EDP101-Diş Hekimliği İngilizcesi I

This course is designed for freshman dentistry students and it mainly aims to equip them with writing skills required for their undergraduate studies. In this course, students practice writing well-organized classification essays, cause and effect essays and research paper abstracts as they learn about the parts of research papers and the functions of each part. Students also prepare their CVs along with a cover letter and also practice writing formal e-mail and a Statement of Purpose to be used for their future academic studies and work applications. While the primary focus is on writing skills for academic purposes, all four skills are practiced throughout the course.

 

 

EDP-102-Diş Hekimliği İngilizcesi II
